چکیده

Spatial, temporal, andmodulatory factors affecting the evolvability ofGasNets—astyle of artificialneuralnetwork incorporating an analogue of volume signalling— are investigated. The focus of the article is a comparative study of variants of the GasNet, implementing various spatial, temporal, and modulatory constraints, used as control systems in an evolutionary robotics task involving visual discrimination. The results of the study are discussed in the context of related research. © 2010Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Complexity 00: 000–000, 2010

Preliminary Investigations on the Evolvability of a Non spatial GasNet Model

This paper addresses the role of space in evolving a novel NonSpatial GasNet model. It illustrates that this particular neural network model which make use of modulatory effects of diffusing gases has its evolvability improved when its neurons are not constrained to a Euclidean space. The results show that successful behaviour is achieved in fewer evaluations for the novel unconstrained GasNet ...

Temporally Adaptive Networks: Analysis of GasNet Robot Control Networks

Identification of the fundamental properties necessary for the generation of adaptive behaviour is one of the primary goals for Artificial Life. In this paper, we address the related question of whether we can identify general useful properties of a given solution class. Such an approach provides a potentially scalable framework that may enable us to identify general properties of more complex ...

Flexible Couplings: Diffusing Neuromodulators and Adaptive Robotics

Recent years have seen the discovery of freely diffusing gaseous neurotransmitters, such as nitric oxide (NO), in biological nervous systems. A type of artificial neural network (ANN) inspired by such gaseous signaling, the GasNet, has previously been shown to be more evolvable than traditional ANNs when used as an artificial nervous system in an evolutionary robotics setting, where evolvabilit...

Toward a Dynamical Systems Analysis of Neuromodulation

This work presents some first steps toward a more thorough understanding of the control systems employed in evolutionary robotics. In order to choose an appropriate architecture or to construct an effective novel control system we need insights into what makes control systems successful, robust, evolvable, etc. Here we present analysis intended to shed light on this type of question as it appli...

Neuronal Plasticity and Temporal Adaptivity: GasNet Robot Control Networks

Designing controllers for autonomous robots is not an exact science, and there are few guiding principles on what properties of control systems are useful for what kinds of task. In this article we analyze the functional operation of robot controllers developed using evolutionary computation methods, to elucidate the strengths and weaknesses of the underlying control system class. By comparing ...
